Monosolenium tenerum
Monosolenium tenerum, commonly known as Pellia, is a unique liverwort aquarium plant with a moss-like appearance and thick, translucent green thalli. It grows as lush cushions that are perfect for the foreground or midground of aquascapes.
Unlike traditional mosses, Pellia has broader, flatter leaves and thrives in low to medium light conditions, making it ideal for low-tech tanks, shrimp aquariums, and nano setups. It attaches well to rocks and driftwood and can be used as a carpeting plant with gentle water flow.
This plant requires little maintenance and does not demand CO₂, though it will grow denser and more vibrantly with added CO₂ and nutrients. Pruning helps maintain its shape and prevent detachment.
Is Monosolenium tenerum the same as moss?
While it looks like moss, it is actually a liverwort with broader thalli.
Can Pellia grow without CO₂?
Yes, it's ideal for low-tech tanks, though CO₂ will boost its growth.
Does Pellia need to be attached to hardscape?
It grows best when tied or glued to driftwood or rocks to keep it in place.
